Xbox Ad Banned in the U.K. for Encouraging Street Racing

"Reuters reports that a television commercial for the Xbox 360 had to be pulled after the industry watchdog criticized it for 'glamorising street car racing.'

The Advertising Standards Agency said the advertisement, which featured a driver weaving in and out of traffic, being chased through a busy city centre, 'could be seen to condone dangerous driving'

It showed the car overturning and the driver getting out and being handed a police badge by his pursuers.

The ASA ruled the commercial 'breached health and safety and driving standards rules,' and should not be broadcast again. "

EB Leaks Prices of Rock Band Accessories

"Earlier this week, EA announced Rock Band, the next game from Harmonix. Rock Band will allow gamers to perform music from the world’s biggest rock artists with their friends as a virtual band using drum, bass/lead guitar and microphone peripherals, in addition to offering deep online connectivity.

Today, EB Games has revealed the price for the different Rock Band accessories. First, there's a Rock Band Wireless Guitar Controller, which according to EB will cost $79.99. It is worth mentioning that yesterday, Harmonix developer Jason Booth confirmed that the Guitar Hero X-plorer Controller will work with Rock Band.

EB is also listing a Rock Band Drums Set, which has the same retail price of the wireless guitar, $79.99.

Finally, there's a Rock Band Microphone that has a $39.99 retail price and it is currently listed only as a PS3 accessory but we expect it to be available for the Xbox 360 too.

EB has a November 1, 2007 release date for all these accessories but it might be just a date used as a placeholder. "

X-plorer problems, potential recall?

"Apparently, all is not well in the land of rock. Reports are coming in to Joystiq that many Guitar Hero X-plorer guitars have unresponsive whammy bars. We've also received reports, along with Joystiq, that some Target stores are refusing to sell the game, saying that there has been a recall. We have been unable to confirm whether or not there has been a recall yet, though we should know sometime today.

Here at Fanboy Towers, we have at least one broken X-plorer, owned by none other than our own David Dreger. It seems that there are two variants of the X-Plorer, one with the pedal jack near the power cord and one with the pedal jack on the bottom of the guitar. Joystiq reports that the problem exists in the variant with the pedal jack near the power cord, but David claims otherwise, as his pedal jack is on the bottom. If you've been upset because you cannot yet afford Guitar Hero II (like me), then you may want to hold off a bit longer to see where this all goes. We'll keep you posted on the situation as it develops."

MS Enhances Console Warranty too

"While earlier today we reported on MS offering replacement discs for recent games they published, we're now giving you the heads up for their new warranty policy on the console itself. First off, they're supplying free shipping both ways should your console call it quits. Now, if you send in a console after the warranty has expired, you'll have to still pay for repairs, but will get another year's warranty with it. On top of that, the console you get sent back, within five business days, will be the one you sent, for the most part. Finally, the customer service representatives will be providing a much better experience for consumers should they contact MS with an issue.

Sounds like Microsoft is taking action and showing they want to be known for the way they treat those who aren't getting the best results from their 360. You happy to hear this, or is it about damn time?"

No HDMI for sure for old Xbox 360

Rumors started to run over the internets last week that a component-to-HDMI adapter was in the works to ensure the current Xbox 360 revisions can also jump on the HDMI hypewagon. Regrettably, the story was nothing more than some misinformed support folks spreading information to shut up complaining customers.

Engadget reported last week that one of their readers had ‘politely’ flung some names at Microsoft Support about his Xbox 360 Premium not supporting HDMI, and that the friendly recipient replied to this “promising an upcoming HDMI to component adapter for the ‘box to make his situation perhaps a bit more bearable.” As anyone with the slightest bit of technical knowledge can deduce, this response is at the very least highly unlikely for some very obvious reasons:

  1. It already exists, with a sweet $299 MSRP, excluding required YPbPr-to-D-sub conversion cable.
  2. It would rather destroy the whole point of HDMI if you first let the 360 convert to analog YPbPr signal and then convert back to HDMI including double conversion loss and inherent loss from converting to a lossy format.

Which only leaves the option of Microsoft releasing an HDMI cable to be plugged directly into the Core or Premium 360 units, but if that were possible, why aren’t there DVI-D cables out there already? Indeed, the 360 simply didn’t support it until the Elite’s mainboard changes, as Andre Vrignaud explains on his blog:

Unfortunately there will not be an HDMI adapter released for the original 360. The HDMI spec is basically a 2-way street and requires the specific port on both sides to be enabled. This is why we had to change the box.

Hopefully we can now put all these rumors to rest permanently, and resume the bitching about why Microsoft didn’t choose to support HDMI 1.3 like the PS3.

Thanks Colby for the submit.
