LCD Vs Plasma in 2007

Engadget HD: "As long as we can remember people have debated; what is the best HDTV technology? Sure every technology has it downsides, but when we are talking about picture quality above all else, which is the best? In the past people would debate LCD vs Plasma which really left us scratching our head because at the time the smallest Plasma was 37' and the largest LCD was 32'. Well those times are over and many LCDs and Plasmas are the same size -- well almost the same size, while Plasmas are 37', 42', 50' and 60' LCDs are 32', 40', 42', 46', 52' and a host of other sizes. There is little doubt that LCD has more sizes available and arguably more detail, it also costs more, but we aren't talking about size here, we're talking about picture quality. Plasmas have been able to boast better blacks and better colors than LCD, but in recent years LCD technology has made leaps and bounds in this area as well as the new 120Hz models, which begs the question do Plasmas still have better blacks and colors than LCDs? Sure they are susceptible to burn in and many are only 720p vs 1080p, but most ISF engineers agree that accurate colors and black are more important than resolution. We thought that a quick trip to the big box stores would help clear things up, but we noticed something very odd, while they carry the top of the line LCDs, they only carry the very inexpensive Plasmas, so of course a $4000 52" LCD will look better than a $2000 Plasma, right? But would it look better than a $4000 Plasma and if so why do the big box stores push LCD so much? The one thing we do know is that this debate is far from over and that when shopping for a TV it is important not to get to so caught up in the technology that you forget to look at the picture.

Halo 2 Theme on Guitar Hero II? Schweet

Xbox 360 Fanboy: "OXM's exclusive article and review combo of Guitar Hero II in their March issue had an interesting tidbit on an exclusive song. Apprarently, the Xbox 360 version will get a little spartan nostalgia as they get to rock out to the Mjolnir Mix of the Halo 2 theme. In terms of the song itself, it sounds like a lot of fun, as the guitar is very distinctive. Honestly, who wouldn't want to play the Halo 2 theme?

Still, when we read the magazine's article prior to coming across this news, we didn't see any mention of the song, but perhaps we overlooked it in a sidebar or something. So, until we double check our issue of OXM, or a Fanboy reader confirms it, we're going to classify this as a rumor. No word if it is going to be available on the disc off the bat or through a download off of Xbox Live Marketplace. We're going to look into this as soon as we can. Let's say this is true, how do you feel about the Halo's theme showing up in other games?"

Gamer busted for "borrowing" library WiFi after hours

Engadget: "We're well aware of WiFi bogarting from unsuspecting neighbors or coffee shops, but who knew there'd be a crackdown at the local house o' books? Cops couldn't leave well enough alone when they rolled up on 21 year-old Brian Tanner jammin' on some WoW-type action in a library parking lot. Tanner's lappy was confiscated and he now faces possible criminal charges for illegally accessing WiFi at the Palmer, Alaska library after hours. While the library could thwart such wardrivers by simply disabling the dang signal at closing, they continue to enforce some usage rules that Mr. Tanner may or may not have been aware of -- the authorities claim this greedy gamer's notorious for WiFi piggybacking and has been 'chased out of a number of locations' in the area."

Battlestations: Midway Downloads Coming Soon

TeamXbox: "Eidos has announced it plans to release two new historical battle maps and brand new vehicles on Xbox Live. Available during March, the new battle maps will reenact two epic battles from the Pacific war: The Battle of Sibuyan Sea and The Raid on Truk. Both maps and five new vehicles will be available to download for 600 Microsoft points. The following is the description provided by Eidos:

The Battle of the Sibuyan Sea provides a new multi player experience based on one of the major battles of the Leyte Gulf Campaign, the greatest naval warfare battle in history that effectively destroyed the Japanese fleet in October of 1944. Players command either the US Fleet featuring the USS Iowa and USS Enterprise or Japan's finest fleet, Kurita, featuring the super battleships Yamato and the ill-fated Musashi.

The single player battle, The Raid on Truk, is based on Operation Hailstone, a massive naval air and surface attack launched by the United States Navy against the Japanese naval and air base at Truk. The devastating attack took place in mid-February 1944. Players command the US Fleet in a four phase battle starting with a P-38 air strike and leading to the command of the USS Enterprise and her screening force. "

Oblivion ends at Shivering Isles

Xboxic: "The fantastic world of Oblivion was unleashed on the Xbox 360 nearly a year ago, and developer Bethesda has shown great dedication to their product by releasing a seemingly endless stream of downloadable content. Upcoming expansion Shivering Isles will however not only be the first, but also the last true expansion to the epic.

OXM caught an interview with Bethesda’s Peter Hines in 360 Gamer Magazine, in which he is quoted as saying:

Work pretty much started on Shivering Isles once Oblivion was done. We started looking at what we wanted to do, where we wanted to set it, all that stuff. It pretty much started last March. Shivering Isles is our last big thing: it’s our first and last expansion for Oblivion.

For those aching for more content in the saga this spells bad news, but Hines refuses to elaborate on the fate of smaller DLC. It should however be clear that we’re not going to get 10+ hours of new gameplay for Oblivion on the Marketplace again after Shivering Isles hits the download area.

Good news is of course that Bethesda did show a year of good dedication to their product, gracefully forgetting the Horse Armor fiasco, and that they can now dedicate themselves fully to other upcoming projects such as Fallout 3 and the inevitable Elder Scrolls V."

GoW 2 will look better than GoW 1

Xboxic : "Gears of War has set the standard for the way games look. When it was released back in November, it was certainly the best looking game at that time. Even now, it is probably still the best looking game on the 360 to date, with games trying to match it at every step. However it could get better, according to Cliff Bleszinski.

In a recent interview with EGM (posted on 1UP), Cliffy B reveals that Gears 2 will look better, and that there is still more in the 360 to unlock in terms of power and potential. Not only that, but he reveals other interesting details about possible DLC and more in the full interview below:

EGM: Gears of War is the bestlooking game for any console right now. Can you outshine it with Gears of War 2?

Cliff Bleszinski: Well, first off, we haven’t actually committed to saying that we’re doing a sequel yet. So I see what you’re doing there….

EGM: But Gears’ ending says there’s going to be a sequel.

CB: Well, I don’t know about you, but I want to kill more stuff. I think there’s a pretty good chance that we might be doing something after this.

EGM: Graphically speaking, is there room to improve?

CB: I think there’s more that we could squeeze out of the 360. You get used to the limitations and potential that this console has, and then you can really start exploring. I guarantee that, in the future, the technology of what we do here will squeeze every bit of coolness out of [the 360]. If there’s a follow-up, it’ll definitely look better than the first.
