HD DVD one step closer to that magic price point of $299

At just about the one year anniversary of the format war, it looks like Toshiba is throwing the next punch. HD DVD will be one step closer to that magic price point of $299, with that latest update of the MSRP of their HD DVD players. According to a few retailers at the AVSFroum on April 1st Toshiba will change the MSRP and the least expensive model; the A2 will now have an MSRP of $399. The A2 isn't the only model with a new price, as the other two models see a drop as well, the A20 will be $499 and finally the high end model, the XA2 for $799. So if price was the only thing stopping you from getting in the HD DVD game and the Xbox360 add-on just isn't your style, then now might just be the time. Of course some of you will still be waiting for the $600 Blu-ray player instead. Toshiba drops HD DVD MSRP, effective 4/1/07 - Engadget HD

Gears of War movie rights purchased

Look what we have here, another big video game intellectual property destined for the big screen. Variety is reporting that the Gears of War movie rights have been purchased by New Line Cinema with Stuart Beattie writing the screenplay and Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey producing. We figured Gears of War was destined for the movies, you know, since it has sold a crapload of games and is uber popular. Let's just hope the movie does the game justice and doesn't end up like our beloved Halo movie ... which we will be seeing someday (hopefully). Good job Epic Games and feel free to send us pictures of your entire development team rolling around in stacks of your newly earned greenbacks.

Zephyr dubbed 360 Elite, new details

With the revelation that the black Xbox 360, also known as "Zephyr" is in fact real (the image above is a dev kit, by the way), Engadget has gathered some concrete details from a trusted source. Some of these details were uncovered earlier this morning, but some questions -- particularly the notion of built in WiFi -- are brand new. See the fresh details below.
  • First of all, the black Xbox 360 will be officially known as the Xbox 360 Elite.
  • The Elite will be manufactured in limited quantities, possibly a few hundred thousand.
  • Everything included with the unit will be black, including the case, controller, and Live headset. The packaging will be new as well.
  • The Elite will cost $479 and will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs.
  • Eventually, a white version of the Elite will replace Xbox 360 Premium packs. Presumably, this will happen shortly after the Elite is sold out. Once this happens, Premiums will include the 120 GB HDD and HDMI.
  • There is no solid date for the Elite-to-Premium transition, though it is estimated to happen late summer or early fall.
  • The Elite runs cooler than the current Premium, but it is unknown if it takes advantage of 65nm chips.
  • Prices could remain the same when Premiums convert to 120GB/HDMI, but a price cut may still occur once the 65nm chips are implemented.
  • The HD-DVD player will definitely not be bundled with the Elite and Microsoft stands by its claim that it has no plans to ever integrate an HD-DVD drive into the Xbox 360.
  • There are no plans to integrate WiFi into the Elite or future Premium packs.
So there you have it, everything we know about the Elite until Microsoft decides to send out an official press release. Now that you know all the details (especially the bit about the Elite running cooler), do you plan on picking up an Xbox 360 Elite?

"Zephyr" Xbox 360 rumors correct; coming late April

Game Informer's April issue confirms the mountain of rumors about the "Zephyr" Xbox 360. The Black, 120 GB HDD, HDMI enabled Xbox 360. Yeah, that one. Also worth noting is that the magazine has a policy of not writing fake stories in their April issue, as well as confirming that the story is indeed true. So, we're looking at a third Xbox 360 SKU in late April priced around $479 USD, which still has the standard DVD drive. After all, they already have a Black HD DVD player model produced. How do you current 360 owners feel about this? Are you going to buy a new console to take advantage of its 1080p via HDMI goodness? At least it comes with an HDMI cable.

Apparently, the 120 GB HDD will also be available for sale separately for "under $200", but the same can be said for the HD DVD player. Hopefully it will follow suit of the memory units and take the 20 GB HDD's price, bumping the previous drive's cost for consumers down. We've got scans of the magazine for your viewing pleasure after the break.

Sakaguchi praises Xbox, unimpressed with PS3

Speaking with GameSpot during GDC, Final Fantasy creator and head of Mistwalker Studio, Hironobu Sakaguchi, had some interesting things to say about his recent projects, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, as well as a few choice thoughts on Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and game development in general. One nice bit of info: There will be a playable demo of Blue Dragon available on Marketplace before the game ships in August (Sakaguchi hopes for a June or July release for the demo).

Speaking about the Xbox 360 itself, Sakaguchi believes it to be an excellent development platform. Sakaguchi notes his collaboration with Artoon and Ensemble Studios, stating that it has been very beneficial to his development process. Sakaguchi says that once he saw how well the 360 handled water effects, he actually created more ponds and lakes in Blue Dragon just because they looked beautiful. Sakaguchi is also impressed by the Xbox Live network, noting the expense and difficulty that Square encountered in building networks for its games.

As for the 360's performance in Japan, Sakaguchi says it's all about marketing. For instance, he loves Gears of War (we already knew that), but says it was so poorly marketed that it's virtually unknown in Japan. Sakaguchi believes that Microsoft still hasn't latched onto a marketing campaign on par with "Jump In," and he says that "Do! do! do!" isn't cutting it.

Concerning Sony's PS3, Sakaguchi is unimpressed, stating, "Kutaragi-san's architecture ... seven DSPs and a low-powered CPU. I don't like the PS3's architecture." Sakaguchi believes that programmers want to create good software, but PS3 designer, Ken Kutaragi, has made it very difficult. The PS3 disses don't stop their either. When questioned about motion control, Kutaragi says that he finds it unnecessary for the kinds of games he develops (RPGs). Furthermore, he notes that the 360 controller is the "the best one that I've seen, especially the analog. And it's easy to operate, and it's really reactive, unlike the Sixaxis."

When questioned about Final Fantasy and how he would feel about competing with it should it ever grace the 360, Sakaguchi welcomes the challenge. Furthermore, he believes the series should be ported to the Xbox 360, as it would be very successful in North America and Europe. He also notes that the White Engine (Final Fantasy XIII's engine) is multiplatform, implying that a 360 port would be relatively easy.

Finally, Sakaguchi says that Gears of War impressed him so much, he's interested in developing a shooter himself. Hit the "read" link for the full interview.

It's official: Devil May Cry 4 on Xbox 360

Is any PS3 title safe? In case you haven't picked up on the all the news just yet, you should know that Devil May Cry 4 is now officially coming to the Xbox 360. Announced in the dead of night (for us anyway) by Capcom, Devil May Cry 4 is now headed to the PS3, Xbox 360, and even PC. Are we surprised? No, not really. Capcom has been very open about expanding its properties, making a particular effort to develop titles on PCs, which makes quick console ports a snap. And of course, DMC4 has been rumored for a while, too (does this mean MS will be buying Capcom after all?).

But seriously, what's next? Tekken? Kingdom Hearts? Who knows. Right now we're excited enough for the third person action promised by DMC4. Anyone glad to see this show up on the Xbox 360? For that matter, was anyone planning to buy a PS3 just for Devil May Cry 4?
