First GTA IV details surface

The latest edition of Game Informer features extensive GTA IV coverage and fortunately for us the first details leaked. Some guy on some forum got his hands on a copy and the first details and scans are slowly finding their way around the internets. We’ll be updating this post as soon as any new info hits so keep that F5 button firmly pressed.

Game Informer

The first big scoop is that the game will feature no planes. It’s not clear whether or not this has to do with hardware issues (Saints Row developer Volition blamed the 360’s lack of harddrive for the absence of planes) or with the fact that the game is set in New York. The tragic events of 9/11 caused Rockstar to scrap planes from GTAIII, which was also set in Liberty City, so this might very well be the reason.

Game Informer played the 360 version.

If you were getting your hopes up for visiting each of the 3 areas from the last-gen GTA games then you’re going to be in for a let down, the game’s entirely set in Liberty City. However, the game is going to be even bigger than San Andreas.

The game’s storyline is going to offer more freedom than before, you’re no longer a slave to the people that issue you missions. You’re free to draw your own path. The character you’re playing is called Niko Bellic and apparently you won’t be riding unicycles.

“Ballic is not going to be riding a Unicycle or Rollerblading around, we’re giving a choice of variety that feels right for the character. We are not suddenly saying there will be no more motorbikes, were keeping all of that stuff, we are keeping the same range and diversity that we had it’s just going to fit the character.”

Apparently the pedestrians aren’t just lifeless props that are just aimlessly wandering around anymore; “a big part of New York life is walking the streets and meeting lunatics”, says Rockstar founder Dan Houser. He said that they were definitely going to try to incorporate this into the game.

The Game Informer issue with all this and more is on stands on April 18th. And don’t forget to refresh for updates.

Xbox 360 gets new 1080p HD video codecs

"Ah, nothing like the smell of fresh codecs in the morning. Hidden inside the list of new features to be bundled with the spring dashboard update is a handful of new video codecs that will be supported by the Xbox 360. The new codecs are H.264 and MPEG-4 Part 2. What does all this mean? Honesly, we have no idea. Lucky for us, our similarly bewildered kin at Joystiq found an answer. According to the video wiz kids at Red Kawa, 'This puts Microsoft at the head of the pack in the Apple TV vs PS3 vs Xbox 360 video battle royale.' The 360 will be able to display 1080p H.264 Level 4.1 and H.264 High Profile. This bests Apple TV which is maxed at 720p H.264 Level 3.1 and H.264 Main Profile. As for the PS3, it supports 1080p H.264 but only at H.264 Main Profile. Take that ... probably!

One important note, this does not mean that the Xbox 360 will finally support DivX or Xvid. All your torrenting fantasies will have to wait. Still, this will add some more decent HD video capability to the Xbox 360, and that's always a good thing."

Vegas' Red Edition DLC to hit next week

"In IGN's latest preview of Rainbow Six: Vegas' Player's Pack Red Edition, they reveal that the release date is slated for next Thursday, the 18th. This information should put some restless gamer's minds at ease, as the content was originally supposed to come out in March. The price point was not confirmed, except for the fact that it will be under 1,000 Microsoft Points off of Marketplace. Hopefully this has been worth the wait, will you be picking it up, and at what price?"

Guitar Hero III60 encore this fall

"RedOctane's Support Center has an interesting tidbit of information regarding the next installment of Guitar Hero, and it's release schedule. The PS2, PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 can expect to be rocking out to a new set of songs to unlock in Guitar Hero III this Fall (for North America). This also will be Neversoft's first shot at the game, so it will interesting to see what direction they take the series, and if the pedal jack will be used or not. Do you think that this is too soon for the next game? Or is it justified as the PS2 release was back in November?"

Halo 3 Beta dates announced

"Details were just released about the Halo 3 beta, specifically the date. The beta will kick off on May 16th and run until June 6th. Plus Bungie posted a new MP Video with (to quote Frankie) ‘a ton of stuff…you simply haven’t seen before.’"

Quake III: Team Arena For Xbox Live Arcade

According to a new game rated over at the ESRB for the Xbox360, Quake III: Team Arena is hitting the Xbox360. Because this game is older, we can only assume it is coming to the Xbox Live Arcade!
