Big TV Watch: Optoma 120-inch DLP

monstershotoptomawtmk.jpgThere's a new sheriff in Big TV town, Optoma. We came across their "Worlds Largest 1080p" 120-inch rear projection DLP over in the South Hall today at CES. Ridiculous doesn't even begin to explain how large this TV is. Almost as impressive as the screen size though, is its depth. Measuring in at only 37-inch this TV is pretty damn skinny for a DLP of its stature. Sadly though Optoma is pricing this dream screen at $8.13/square inch, or $50,000.

Carmack Gives 360 Next-Gen Edge, Considers DS

Commenting specifically on the internal architecture of the PlayStation 3, Carmack said: “I think the decision to use an asymmetric CPU by Sony was a wrong one. There are aspects that could make it a winning decision, but they’re not helpful to the developers.”

He added, “I’ve been pulling for Microsoft, because I think they’ve done a better job for development support, and I think they have made somewhat smarter decisions on the platform. It’s not like the PlayStation 3 is a piece of junk or anything … they just took a design decision that wasn’t the best from a development standpoint.”

Microsoft's CES booth tour

Just like last year, we decided to take a quick saunter down the road to check out Microsoft's massive booth at CES. If Vegas was plastered with Vista adverts (and it was), then Microsoft's booth was plaster central: standing from the middle of the booth, you couldn't look anywhere without a dozen Vista logos being within eyeshot.

Microsoft Confirms Existence of Upgraded 360 news from 1UP.com

Murmurings of an upgraded Xbox 360 have circled for some time, but and the pictures leaked, an announcement seemed likely. GameSpot sat down with Microsoft's Christ Satchell, general manager at the company's game developer group, and he acknowledged the leaks were real, though remained mum on whether we'd be able to buy it.

"We're always working on prototypes and new technologies and just playing with stuff in Redmond to see what's interesting. ... At the moment, everything you might have seen is just looking at our experimentation back in Redmond, not really a product that we're thinking about announcing," he said.

Hands On: Lair For PS3--underwhelming with a terrible framerate...

"The game starts to lose its luster is in a number of places. The framerate is just not up to par...during dragon-to-dragon battles...it sank to rates that I'd consider bordering on unplayable...The game also appeared to be heavily aliased, with jagged edges most noticeable on dragon wings..." while displayed on Sony 1080p Bravias.

Sony Stock Plummets on News of PS3 Sales less than 50% of Prediction

Sony sold 466,716 PlayStation 3 units in Japan from its Nov. 11 domestic launch date to the end of December. The figures fall short of the 1 million consoles Sony predicted it would sell domestically by year's end which helped send Sony shares plummeting Wednesday on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

PS3 demand cools as retailers see returns, slow sales

The PlayStation 3 launch has met several key Sony milestones, but early indications suggest it may not be the grand-slam hit the company had hoped for.
"Do you, uh, take returns without reciepts?"

We recently had an opportunity to speak with an unnamed GameStop employee who indicated that the PlayStation 3 isn't in nearly as short of supply as first thought.

"We have lots [of PS3s]. So does everybody else," said the employee, referring to other GameStop stores. He explained that Nintendo's Wii console was sold out nearly everywhere, and Nintendo is having difficulties meeting the explosive demand for the system. The GameStop in question had been receiving Wii shipments every week, according to the employee, but lately the shipments have shifted to bi-weekly with only a handful of consoles -- four, in the case of his store.

The employee explained that the PS3 has seen a large number of returns since its November launch, mostly due to customers failing to attain huge resale rates for the consoles on eBay auctions.

This isn't the only report of slowing PS3 sales. An ArsTechnica piece quotes an anonymous game retailer who explains that "It's not that we've gotten more PS3s than Wiis, it's just that no one wants them."

"We've seen a few returned. We have four in the store right now," the employee told ArsTechnica. The piece also confirms that failed eBay auctions are triggering a deluge of PS3 returns from would-be resellers hoping to recoup their PS3 purchase costs.

The ArsTechnica source also mentions that his retailer's vice president has asked all managers to place prominent notes advertising the fact that the stores have PS3s in stock.

Microsoft confirms Zune will play games by July 2008

Microsoft's Peter Moore, chief Xbox-exec and avid bicep tattooer, confirmed a plan to add video games to the Zune (Xune?) at CES yesterday. This would bring the Zune up to speed with the iPod's ability to offer games, albeit several months late. Moore said the Zune's large screen would provide a better platform for handheld gaming, gushing, "I love the interface, I love the screen." We know you do, Peter. We know you do. While this isn't quite what we were thinking when pondering a Microsoft-branded handheld gaming system, everyone's gotta start somewhere (we're looking at you, Zune). Of course, Peter Moore -- perhaps prematurely -- told BusinessWeek last year, "It can't just be our version of the iPod ... in addition to playing music and videos, a Microsoft device would include games." And now it will ... err, rather, it will in about eighteen months.

Sony LIES About PS3 Award...What Else Is New?

By Andrew Groen

This past Monday is my daily update to CB’s 2007 Preview I mentioned something a bit controversial. Basically I said that Sony has a nasty habit of lying to us gamers and I don’t know why we put up with it.

”Even if we do get an official word on a Killzone project from Sony or developer Guerilla Games, the result is usually a giant pack of lies. Between the first game being touted as the game to finally top Halo, and that whole fiasco at E3 ‘05 with their “real-time” footage, who knows what to believe from those guys.”

I’m sure some Sony fans were none to pleased to hear such words but I come to you now to offer you words of sincerest condolence and apology…

Eh hem…I told you so.

With that out of the way, I think I had better explain myself. See for the past week Sony has been bragging like mad. They’ve been running from publication to publication telling journalists that Sixaxis controller actually won an Emmy for contributions to game design. We here at CB didn’t really see why that was significant gaming news, and so glossed over the story. When the story hit however everyone and their brother raised an eyebrow and mumbled, “Wait the Sixaxis beat out the Wii-mote?”

Wii Outsells PlayStation 3 in Japan

TOKYO, Jan. 10 — Japan is offering some of the first glimpses into the hotly contested market for new video game consoles, and the view so far doesn’t look good for struggling Sony and its much-touted PlayStation 3.

Enterbrain, a Tokyo-based video game magazine publisher, released sales estimates in Japan today that showed Sony fell far short of its goal of selling one million PlayStation 3 consoles here last year. Sony sold 534,336 units between their debut in Japan on Nov. 11 and Jan. 7, Enterbrain said.

By contrast, Enterbrain reported that rival Nintendo sold 1.14 million units of its less expensive new game console, Wii, by the same date, despite going on sale three weeks after PlayStation. Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which has had limited success breaking into the Japanese market, has sold 311,053 units since arriving in December 2005, Enterbrain said.
