Study: Car Racing Games Lead to Bad Driving

Reuters reports a study performed by German researchers that investigates whether playing racing games can promote risk taking in actual road traffic situations.

The researchers found that the frequency of playing racing games was positively associated with competitive driving, obtrusive driving, and car accidents; a negative association with cautious driving was also observed.

"Driving actions in these games often include competitive and reckless driving, speeding and crashing into other cars or pedestrians, or performing risky stunts with the vehicle. In short, most actions in racing games imply a very high risk of having an accident or severe crash in a highly realistic virtual road traffic environment," the researchers wrote.

Do you think that PGR or Forza have affected your driving at all? If so, did playing these video games get you into car accidents?

Unfortunately I would have to agree with this. Having done some RL racing and adding the twist of gaming to those skills, I would have to say that on occasion unnecessary roughness tends to rear it's ugly head. I have found myself on occasion taking corners a little differently looking for optimum apex points and even going into intersections a little hotter than normal maximizing break potential. GOD forbid if the light is turning yellow and there is a cop near by cause,, I am definitely going for it. The worst is when I am in a hurry to get somewhere as the world seems to turns into a game of pole position. :D I am happy to say I have not been in any accident or gotten any tickets for this shift in driving and feel that those commuters I have seeing on a daily basis are simply getting out of the way now. Lol. Ahhhh that is some of the time.
